South African Builder – May 2014

Leading fire door manufacturer, Bitcon Industries, has secured several new contracts for its respected range of products.

Bob Vollmer, director of Bitcon, says the company’s Rubidor fire doors have been installed in new Johannesburg office blocks, such as 66 Grayston and 90 Grayston, and for shopping centres such as The Pavilion Mall in Durban (upgrade project), the Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg (extension project), and the new Rehoboth Shopping Centre in Windhoek.

In addition, special fire doors were specified by designers Pollock William James & Partners, in conjunction with the main contractors, Stefanutti Stocks, for the new Nestle building, in Estcourt.

The specification called for tailor-made Rubidor units, with both the doors and frames made from stainless steel.

“Bitcon’s Rubidor fire doors were also installed as part of the upgrade of the SA Police Services headquarters in Durban, for the new Perskor Building on the University of Johannesburg campus, the George Hospital, and several Netcare hospitals throughout South Africa.  In some cases, these orders also called for Bitcon lead-lined anti-radiation doors,” Vollmer stated.  “Bitcon has recently also supplied transformer room doors for SANRAL tollgates throughout Gauteng.”

Bitcon operates from a high-tech manufacturing plant in Jet Park where the Rubidor fire doors are produced in accordance with the National Test Standard, SANS 1253:2003.

“The fire doors are clad with a variety of finishes, including Masonite, timber veneers, formica laminates, and edged with hardwood lipping.  Double doors are fitted with rebated meeting stiles.  Bitcon’s Class D doors have standard steel cladding or veneer over concealed steel cladding,” Vollmer stated.

The door frames are pressed from either 1.6mm (Class A&B) or 2mm (Class D) steel sheet, or from galvanised sheet if required.  “Heavy-duty flanged brass hinges with nylon washers are fitted to the doors, and viewing panels can be included on request”, he added.
