Bitcon Industries, based in Jet Park, Gauteng, and part of the Vitrex Group of companies, is supplying fire doors for Eskom’s two new multibillion rand power stations currently under construction, as well as other major projects underway.

Bitcon director, Bob Vollmer, says the company is supplying its Rubidor fire doors and frames for both the Medupi and Kusile power stations. Some of the fire doors are being manufactured according to special specifications. “The contracts for the two new power stations are the latest of many that Eskom has placed with Bitcon over the years for its power stations throughout South Africa,” Vollmer says.

Medupi, under construction in Lephalale in Limpopo, will, on completion, be the biggest dry-cooled power station in the world. The main contractor is the Medupi Power Station Joint Venture involving Murray & Roberts, Concor and Grinaker-LTA.

Kusile, near Delmas in Mpumalanga, is being built by the Kusile Civil Works Joint Venture in which Stefanutti Stocks Civils, Group Five Civil Engineering, Basil Read and WBHO Construction have joined forces. Once it is complete, Kusile will be one of the largest coal-fired power stations in the world.

Bitcon’s Rubidor fire doors have also been specified by Paragon Architects for the new Alexander Forbes head office, currently under construction in Sandton. The R840-million project for the financial services provider is being built by a WBHO-Tiber Bonvec Construction Joint Venture. The building has a 4-star rating and will provide 38 000m2 of office space.

Bitcon has supplied the fire doors for another Green Star rated office building – Menlyn Corner, in Pretoria. Recently acquired by listed property company, Growthpoint Properties, this 10 000m2 is designed by architects Boogertman + Partners and the main contractor is Stefanutti Stocks Building Gauteng.

Emalahleni-based architects, Michael Payne Associates, specified Bitcon fire doors for the new Highveld Eye Hospital now being built in Emalahleni (formerly Witbank) by JC van der Linder & Venter Projects.

Bitcon is also supplying fire doors for a new Telkom Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering development on the Cape Town Foreshore. Group Five is the main contractor on the project.
